Last week, Meta announced it was rolling out its AI chat function across Europe, overcoming data protection rules that had hamstrung previous rollouts.

Meta began the rollout of its AI product in the US in September 2023, India in June 2024, and the UK in October. According to a blog post last week, the rollout across 21 countries is the largest global expansion of Meta AI to date.

What is the rollout: For users who have the AI product, they find that Messenger and WhatsApp gives them access to their own “AI Studio”, where they can find AI characters to converse with.

Instagram is also adding a "create" screen to allow users to build an AI character in-stream and users will be able to give their AI a voice as well.

Why it matters: The rollout is raising questions around regulation and data protections. Overnight there were reports that the tools had not yet been cleared by the EU Commission.

More broadly Meta - along with other platforms - is grappling with how and where to integrate AI profiles. In January, Meta took down a dozen AI characters after an outcry from users.
