Pinterest begins labelling AI content

Pinterest begins labelling AI content
Image generated with assistance of ChatGPT. Yes we recognise the irony too.

Pinterest has begun labelling AI-generated content as the platform works to combat a growing wave of machine-generated content.

Why it matters: Pinterest recently came under fire from certain outlets for AI-generated “slop” that has driven some users away, with certain bad actors using it to redirect users to spam sites.

What’s changing:

  • AI-generated or modified images will now display a label, per the IPTC metadata standard.
  • These labels have been rolling out for months, appearing at the bottom left of images.
  • Ads won’t get the same prominent labeling—only a disclosure in the “Why am I seeing this ad?” section.

Go Deeper: While AI content hasn’t yet hurt Pinterest’s growth (553M monthly active users in Q4), this move by the platform aims to keep user trust intact.
