The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has arrived on TikTok just weeks before a Federal Election is due to be called.

Why it matters: The AEC's social media is regarded as one of the best teams in government for its use of humour and real-time response to inform voters about the rules and processes around elections.

It comes as Prime Minister Albanese is expected to shortly call a Federal Election where creators, and particularly 'newsfluencers', are expected to play a far greater role than previous polls.

What they said: “We’re joining the platform. It’s arguably never been more important to get on to TikTok and make sure we’re talking to people about how the election is run,” said Evan Ekin-Smyth, AEC digital engagement director, in the AEC's first TikTok.

“So we’re doing it for 2025. If you look at the number of users, there’s about nine million Australian users of TikTok – that’s about half the electoral roll."

Go Deeper: The upcoming election is expected to test the ability of authorities to grapple with social media and in particular the use of AI and the rise of misinformation. The 2023 Voice to Parliament referendum was the first time we saw such technologies use to reach and influence voters.
