What to know about the new CapCut challenger from Instagram 'Edits'

Instagram is set to launch its challenger to the popular video and photo editing app CapCut app in March according to reports.

In a post on Threads Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri noted that Edits will also serve as a “testing platform” for features that will be available in the main [Instagram] app.

Why it matters: TikTok's Capcut has long been the preferred editing app of many creators. In fact when TikTok was briefly down in the US last month many creators were equally upset about losing access to their editing app, which they use across all platforms.

What he said: Mosseri in his regular Q&A session said: “We want to make sure that there are the best possible creative tools for making not only Reels but photos both in the Instagram app and then for video in the Edits app. They’re built on the same codebase, and you’re going to see new features be tried first in the Edits app over time, and the ones that work, we’ll integrate into the main app.”

Go Deeper: This is not the first time Instagram has copied TikTok.

In 2020, Instagram introduced Reels, which was largely a copy of TikTok’s signature short-form video platform. Reels is now one of the most popular features on the Instagram app.
